Shaun Grech is a self-taught artist born in Malta in 1976. The absence of formal training allows Grech unconstrained freedom and experimentation and the elimination of brushes and other 'tools of the trade' (opting instead for direct contact with his paint and canvases) gives Grech's work a powerful, vibrant and direct physical intensity. Expressed in raw and uninhibited ways, Grech's visual interpretations of societies chaotic, sexual, painful, political and often absurd, fused in his very own 'diaries of real life' typify his work as uncompromising and fearlessly veritable.

I consider this artist a real "outsider artist", mainly because he is not interested in creating a landscape or an abstract work and does not care much about what other contemporary artists are doing. He is mainly interested in creating situations through the depiction of characters that relate a particular situation.

From his “Three White Scum” (which has been purchased by the Museum of Fine Arts), his take on the “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” monkey trio, to the explicit “Self Pornicator” to the more conventional “Olympic” to the quasi-cartoonish “Clueless”, Grech’s paintings are probably as close as we get to outsider art in Malta.
